What We Do

Kadam Theatre is a collective of young artists, enthusiasts, and activists based in Damak, Jhapa, Province No. 1, Nepal. Established in 2016, the group consists of members with varying levels of experience in filmmaking and theatre, ranging from senior filmmakers to novice learners. The primary motivation behind its formation was the realization that a collaborative platform was needed to work in the field of theatrical art and support the process of social transformation in Damak and its surrounding areas.

The group came into being at a time when the Nepali theatre and art scene was primarily centered in Kathmandu, leaving limited opportunities for exploring artistic excellence in other parts of the country. Thus, the motto of Kadam Theatre is to ensure the development of modern theatrical rituals in regions beyond the capital, particularly in eastern Nepal. Their vision is to ensure that audiences in rural areas have access to regular theatre shows and artistic-cultural activities. Furthermore, Kadam Theatre strives to create a platform for the next generation of theatre enthusiasts.

The strategic tool employed by Kadam Theatre to support social transformation is the use of theatre art to initiate dialogue and address societal, cultural, and political issues. The strength of the group lies in its members, who come from diverse social backgrounds but share a common goal of using art for social betterment. Despite its relatively short existence, Kadam Theatre has already made significant strides towards its objectives. The group has been actively involved in play production and staging since its early days, with their productions participating in national and international theatre festivals and being performed in various parts of the country.

Additionally, Kadam Theatre organizes theatre training, workshops, and outreach programs in Damak. These initiatives include street plays, playback theatre, site-specific theatre, forum theatre, and other social interventions, allowing the group to engage with the local community. They also organize events such as debates, poetry recitations, literature-related activities, and social campaigns. Kadam Theatre and its members have gained recognition for their remarkable contributions to social initiatives within the local area.

Recently, the group has embarked on the project of establishing a theatre center in Damak. Through the support of the Damak Municipality and the Provincial Government of Province No. 1, Kadam Theatre has acquired a piece of land and has begun the construction of a multi-ethnic cultural center. The construction is expected to be completed by the next fiscal year, enabling the group to stage their plays and conduct other activities on a regular basis.

In summary, Kadam Theatre is a collective of young artists, enthusiasts, and activists based in Damak, Nepal. Founded in 2016, the group aims to develop modern theatrical practices in regions beyond Kathmandu, particularly in eastern Nepal. They utilize theatre as a strategic tool to address social issues and support social transformation. Through play productions, training workshops, outreach programs, and various cultural initiatives, Kadam Theatre has made a significant impact in its short existence. The group is currently working on establishing a theatre center in Damak, which will serve as a hub for their activities and further contribute to the local artistic and cultural scene.
